Coping Skills Jeopardy

Split the group into two teams. The person leading the group picks one of the 100 point categories. Whichever team gets the question correct first will pick the next topic. Add the participants' points up as a team. They can talk about answers before they respond. Each correct question counts for as many points as the side says it does (100, 200, 300, 400, or 500). The game ends when the topics have all been used or you can set a point limit.
Life Lessons:
Talk about triggers-have participants name some of their personal triggers.
Talk about the participants' successful coping skills and some they would like to try.
Talk about humor and if/how that could help the participants.

Please comment below on how you would use it with your population, thoughts on how it has worked for you, advice for others on how to implement it, what you would process and so on! We'd love to hear about it!

    1. Just sent it! I do not have a bank of answers, but if someone gives a silly answer, I make them tell how it is a coping skill/when they'd use it. If they can't come up with one, the other team gets a chance. Also, I say no repeats. I hope y'all enjoy!

    1. I sent you the email with the game. When the students say a coping skill, I usually accept it. If they are being silly, I have them explain how it is a coping skill, and if they cannot do so, I do not accept their answer. I also tell them no repeats.

A few of the coping skills I've heard are: drawing, writing, exercise, stretching, animals, talking to friends/family, going outside, taking a nap, deep breaths, counting to ten, doing dishes, service to others, and so on.

This is a link for a list: http://janetlaird.blogspot.com/2015/09/wellness-tools-vs-coping-skills.html

    1. Thanks for reading my blog! I emailed you a copy of the game.

I developed this game when I was working in an RTC but have used it many times at the mental health hospital I worked at. I used it with children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

I printed each box off on its own piece of paper and set it up like jeopardy on the show (either taped on a wall or laying on a table depending on my room), and then we play like normal jeopardy. (I taped a piece of cardboard paper on the back of each of the papers so they couldn't be seen thru).

As far as coping skills go, I'd take any coping skill if they could back it up with a good reason. Each time one was named, I'd write it on a board or piece of paper, and none were allowed to be repeated.

I processed it in different ways depending on the group. Sometimes, I would have them say where and when they would use that coping skills as they named them in the game.
Other times, I'd ask them to give examples of times they have used that coping skill or times they should have but didn't and how the outcome would have been different.
Occasionally we'd save the processing till the end and talk about the different coping skills and which ones are more effective for them or/and they hadn't used before but will try and name a situation they could use it in.
We've processed how to take a step back so they can begin using the coping skills. We also talked about the importance of using these coping skills and what happens when you don't.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I'd love to hear about how this goes with your group and how you implemented it!
